SHAH ALAM – The proportion of Chinese and Indian voters has emerged as a significant factor motivating the Gerakan to consider fielding candidates in the upcoming Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election.

Political analyst Professor Datuk Dr Sivamurugan Pandian from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) pointed out that the demographic composition, with Chinese voters constituting 30 per cent and Indian voters 18 per cent, has emboldened Gerakan to contemplate participation.

“Given Gerakan’s historical involvement in past Selangor State Elections, they feel entitled to contest.

“Hence, despite expressions of interest from Pas and the Bersatu to nominate Malay candidates, Gerakan believes they deserve a chance,” he said.

Sivamurugan stressed that Gerakan’s decision to nominate a candidate hinges on a consensus within the Perikatan Nasional (PN) alliance not to intrude on seats held or contested in ethnically diverse areas like the Kuala Kubu Baharu state assembly.

Recent reports revealed that Gerakan has shortlisted five potential candidates for the Kuala Kubu Baharu state seat.

Gerakan Deputy President Oh Tong Keong reportedly said that these potential candidates, drawn from local residents representing various ethnic groups, possess the capability to garner voter support.
