Bottle of poison

JOHANNESBURG – There are concerns over a surge in food poisoning cases in Gauteng.

Around 41 children were treated at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital on Monday.

It’s believed they ate rat poison after mistaking it for sweets at a preschool.

Christina Moumakwe from Gauteng Health said the province has recorded 863 cases from October to date, including 11 people who died due to food poisoning.

“We have received this investigation notification from Bara about the 41 children that were admitted,” she said.

“As from yesterday [Tuesday] afternoon, all of them were discharged, none of them has complications.”

She said an investigation is continuing.
