What the Yankees' Strong Spring Training Start Means for the Upcoming Season

Baseball season is back, and The New York Yankees have already launched an incredible season. The bombers kicked off the opening Spring training weekend with a 2-1 record, promising fans an exciting journey ahead. They currently hold a 3-2 record as they progress through their spring training campaign.

The Yanks saw an intense first game, winning 22-10 against Detroit. Many players including Trent Grisham and Oscar Gonzalez made some incredible plays, but the star of the show was none other than top prospect, Spencer Jones. In the top of the fifth Jones made his debut for the Yanks by pinch hitting for Grisham, which resulted in a 470 ft home run.

But Jones wasn’t done there.

Within the span of the rest of this game, he went 3-for-3 with a home run, two singles, and four RBI altogether, making the 6’6 outfielder the very obvious MVP of the game. Jones demonstrated his talent, and both fans and players alike sensed a striking resemblance to the vibes exuded by Aaron Judge.

On Sunday, the 25th, the Yankees engaged in a split-schedule game, facing off against both the Philadelphia Phillies and the Toronto Blue Jays. Marcus Stroman led the game against the Phils, where he threw for 2.1 innings before being taken out. His first inning, however, was a success, where he was able to get a 1-2-3 inning.

Regrettably, he fell short in the second inning, where he gave up three straight runners. This led to a brief withdrawal, after which he reentered the game in the 3rd inning to secure additional outs before ultimately being pulled for the remainder of the game.

“I just need to increase my consistency and feeling good in my mechanics more often. I just feel like it was probably maybe around 25 to 30 [good] pitches today out of the 50.” said Stroman, post game.

On the other hand, Carlos Rodon took the starting role on the mound against Toronto. Rodon’s performance was essential to the Yankees 12-6 win, as he managed to strike out five batters whilst allowing only one hit over 2 1/2 innings. His newest speciality throw, The Cutter, proved to have mixed results in the midst of it all.

Rodon is going to be a crucial part of the rotation this year, so it’s vital to the Yanks’ success that he stays healthy.

Navigating through their first full week of Spring Training games, the Yankees encountered matchups against both the Minnesota Twins and the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Yankees had no trouble carrying their momentum out of the weekend, easily defeating the Twins 9-2. Juan Soto drilled a two run double in the bottom of the third, helping the Bombers snap their tied game. Gleyber Torres and prospect Jorbit Vivas contributed runs as well, ultimately giving them the win.

Their luck wasn’t as high when it came time to facing the Rays, however. The Yankees opted to bring in some younger players for this match, and ultimately fell short, losing 4-2.

The loss was discouraging, but there was still plenty to like, including Triple-A Star Will Warren, who easily worked his way through two innings. Non-roster invitee Jose Rodas also swatted a home run in the fifth.

The hot start to Spring Training is exactly what the Yanks need on their quest for another deep playoff run and a return ot the World Series.

The New York Yankees are set to compete against the Miami Marlins tomorrow, February 29th, with the game scheduled to start at 6:35 pm
