Fighter jet controlled by AI takes US Air Force leader for historic ride
NEW DELHI: An experimental orange and white F-16 fighter jet, controlled solely by artificial intelligence (AI), took to the skies with Air Force secretary Frank Kendall on board.
This development marks one of the most significant advancements in military aviation since the introduction of stealth technology. The Air Force is aggressively pursuing AI integration, aiming for a fleet of over 1,000 unmanned warplanes by 2028.
The test took place at Edwards Air Force Base, a hub for aerospace innovation and classified research.
In an interview following the flight, Kendall emphasized the necessity of AI for security reasons.“It’s a security risk not to have it. At this point, we have to have it,” Kendall said.
He expressed trust in AI’s decision-making abilities, even in the context of launching weapons during warfare.
However, concerns linger regarding the potential for AI to autonomously engage in lethal actions without sufficient human oversight. Arms control experts and humanitarian groups have advocated for stricter regulations on AI use in warfare.
Kendall however, noted that human oversight would always be integral to the decision-making process involving weapon deployment. The military’s pivot towards AI-enabled aircraft is driven by security concerns, cost efficiency, and strategic advantages.
The vulnerability of manned fighter jets due to advancements in electronic warfare necessitates a shift towards AI-controlled drones. Additionally, cost overruns and production delays with existing aircraft models like the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter further motivate this transition.
Vista, the AI-controlled F-16, has showcased remarkable progress, outperforming human pilots in certain scenarios.
The shift towards AI-operated aircraft has raised questions on the future significance of human pilots. While some recognize the possibility of decreased manpower needs, others stress the importance of maintaining superiority in AI technology to counter potential adversaries.
