Fact Check: Old Picture From China Shared As AAP Rally In Gujarat With Misleading Claims
Days after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s wife Sunita Kejriwal campaigned in Dediapada, Gujarat, an image of a huge crowd has gone viral on social media. The image has been shared with the claim that it is a picture of AAP’s rally held in Gujarat on May 2. Vishvas News, the fact checking wing of Jagran New Media (JNM), probed the image and found the claim to be false and misleading.
Vishvas News found that the picture is actually from China, and has no connection to India. The viral image is from Guangzhou city of Chinawhen where a huge crowd had gathered to welcome the Olympic torch.
Fact Check: Viral Image Of Sunita Kejriwal’s Roadshow
A picture of a huge crowd was shared by Facebook user Neelam Rawal on May 2, 2024 with the false claim that it was from Sunita Kejriwal’s rally in Dediapada. The user wrote, “The people of Gujarat took to the streets against the conspiratorial arrest of Arvind Kejriwal ji. Crowd gathered at Sunita Kejriwal’s road show. The public has made up its mind that this time ‘the answer to jail will be through votes.’”
Fact Check: Truth Behind Viral Image Of Sunita Kejriwal’s Rally
The fact checkers of Vishvas News initially used Google Lens to search for the image and discovered that the photo was originally uploaded to the stock photo repository Flickr on May 12, 2008. The description accompanying the photo indicated that it depicts a crowd in Guangzhou, China, gathered to welcome the Olympic torch. Further searches led to the same image on several Chinese websites, where it was identified as depicting the welcoming of the Olympic torch.
Next, the fact checkers searched for pictures and videos of Sunita Kejriwal’s Gujarat road show. However, none of the images resembled the viral picture.
Jeevan Kapuria, Associate Editor at Gujarati Jagran, also confirmed that the viral photo is not from Gujarat. He provided with some pictures from the road show.
In conclusion, Vishvas News determined through its investigation that the picture is not from India but from China, capturing a large crowd in Guangzhou welcoming the Olympic torch.
