Expert's no-raking method to efficiently remove moss from lawns

Moss can make your otherwise luscious lawn look unsightly, and as the UK finally starts to warm up, green-fingered gardeners will be keen to make their outdoor spaces look as lovely as possible.

Moss loves moist conditions to grow, and it’s safe to say that there’s been plenty of rain at the start of 2024, so if you’re noticing more on your lawn, this could be why.

The greenery loves decaying organic plant material too, also known as ‘thatch’, which can gather on the soil’s surface beneath the grass and contains debris. Those looking for glorious gardens this summer can banish pesky moss, however, with an easy no-raking method.

One green-space lover was so keen to make her garden gorgeous that she took to the Gardening UK Facebook Page for recommendations.

She penned: “Lawn treatment for moss. Any recommendations for a moss killer with no need to rake afterwards? In previous years have used the Vitax moss remover, but are there any others out there?”

In the comments, people recommended a fantastic no-raking method which is ideal for gardeners who prefer things to be a little more low maintenance and who don’t like to get a sweat on when they’re pruning their lawn.

Many recommended a moss killer from a particular brand, with one penning: “I used Richard Jackson moss killer. It is great and does the job with no need to rake”, and many agreed. But what makes his moss killer so special? Well, according to him, his moss remover is a natural, plant-based lawn food that gently feeds the lawn for up to 12 weeks, while also naturally removing any unsightly moss.

He explained: “Most gardeners use chemical-based moss killers to get rid of moss on their lawns, but these turn the dying moss black (so it looks horrible), and they can also scorch the lawn and stain the patio. Then you have to rake out the dying moss, which is often hard, back-breaking work”, so he recommended his moss remover as a better and easier alternative.

“As the grass grows, the potash in the feed ‘over feeds’ the moss, which then gradually (after 20 days or so) dies back naturally, you’ll see it slowly turning brown”, he shared.

“The granules also contain naturally occurring ‘friendly’ bacteria that then start to ‘eat’ the dying moss which gradually disappears as your grass grows. There’s no need to rake out the dying moss, nature does the work for you.” The moss remover can be purchased from Amazon for £29.99, or on Richard Jackson Garden for £24.99, and it’s well worth it if you don’t want to get the rake out of the shed.
