Urban Angel’s all day brunch comes recommended by a Scots chef

We all love heading out for brunch at the weekend, and it turns out Edinburgh has some of the best spots to do so.

Top chefs have named their favourite restaurants for brunching in The Times, with two eateries in the capital making the list. Papii Cafe and Urban Angel, both on Hanover Street, were tipped as favourites.

Elsewhere in Scotland, Café Cùil on the Isle of Skye and Glasgow’s Outlier also made the list. Special mention was given to Dishoom which has eateries in Edinburgh and Glasgow, reports the Daily Record.

Starting on the Isle of Skye, Calum Montgomery, the chef-owner of Edinbane Lodge, says Café Cùil is among the best. He hails the eatery’s “super-relaxed” atmosphere which he enjoys solo or as a brigade.

Specials posted on Instagram by owner Clare Coghill have tempted the team to step out for brunch. One highlight is the lobster brioche roll with a dipping bisque sauce. As Calum says, “It was banging.” However, anyone hoping for a visit should know that the restaurant will open from March 1.

Looking to Edinburgh, Stuart Ralston, the chef-patron of Aizle, says Papii’s trademark buttermilk waffles are a favourite of his kids and American wife. Among other restaurants they frequent are Urban Angel, which is open for all day brunch, and Dishoom – a ‘”really good” breakfast and the only chain restaurant Stuart says he’ll visit in Edinburgh. He commends its quick service and popular bacon naan.

As for Glasgow, Dean Parker, the chef-patron of Celentano’s, says Outlier is a winner. He praised its “bustly atmosphere”, “amazing” pastries, and their toasted sourdough with egg, chilli oil and oyster mushroom, and apple cider vinegar muffins with a seasonal veg topping sprinkled atop. His go-to place with his family and visitors is the Good Coffee Cartel where he snags pastries before service on Sundays.

Other eateries praised by chefs include Samphire in Kent, a “brilliant little restaurant” recommended by Tom Kerridge, and Fallow in central London, as recommended by chef-patron Jude Kereama.
