París. Estados Unidos concedió una licencia a la petrolera francesa Maurel & Prom (M&P), lo que le permite seguir operando en Venezuela pese a las sanciones impuestas por Washington, anunció el grupo francés este lunes.

La licencia, que fue concedida el 3 de mayo, “permite a entidades y bancos estadunidenses colaborar con M&P en el marco de sus actividades en Venezuela y, por lo tanto, M&P podrá seguir operando” en el país, según un comunicado.

La autorización expira el 31 de mayo de 2026, pero el grupo, cuyas acciones se dispararon más de 6% en la Bolsa de París poco después de las 07H00 GMT del lunes, “espera que sea renovada”.

Maurel & Prom solicitó esta “licencia específica” a la Oficina de Control de Activos Extranjeros (OFAC) del Departamento del Tesoro estadounidense en septiembre.

Tras una tregua de seis meses, Washington decidió a principios de año reimponer sanciones a Venezuela por considerar que el Gobierno no respetaba las reglas democráticas de cara a las presidenciales del 28 de julio, en las que el presidente Nicolás Maduro aspira a un tercer mandato.

Estados Unidos impuso un embargo petrolero al país sudamericano en 2019 tras no reconocer la elección de Maduro un año antes.

La medida formaba parte de una batería de sanciones que provocaron fuertes tensiones entre Caracas y Washington y contribuyeron a agravar la crisis económica del país caribeño.

Desde entonces, la Casa Blanca ha hecho excepciones, concediendo algunas licencias de explotación, como la otorgada al gigante estadounidense Chevron.

La obtención de esta licencia es una “excelente noticia” para Maurel & Prom, que “aporta una clara visibilidad de cara al futuro”, declaró el Director General del grupo, Olivier de Langavant.

La petrolera francesa posee una participación del 40% en Petroregional del Lago (PRDL), que explota el yacimiento de Urdaneta Oeste.
