New York Yankees place Jon Berti on IL among several roster moves
The New York Yankees won the first game of a doubleheader Saturday and then made several roster moves, including placing infielder Jon Berti on the injured list.
Berti, who has been splitting time with Oswaldo Cabrera at third base, was placed on the 10-day injured list due to a left groin strain. The move is retroactive to April 11.

Yankees make several roster moves
With Berti being placed on the reserve list, the Yankees are likely going to lean heavily on Cabrera at third base while starter D.J. LeMahieu continues to work his way back from a foot fracture he suffered during Spring Training.
Here’s a look at the other roster moves the Yankees made before Game 2 of Saturday’s doubleheader:
- Reinstated RHP McKinley Moore from the 15-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
- Outrighted LHP Clayton Andrews off the Major League roster and onto the roster of Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
- Signed INF Kevin Smith (#74) to a Major League contract and selected him to the active roster.
- Designated LHP Josh Maciejewski for assignment.
- Recalled RHP Ron Marinaccio (#97) from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
- Appointed RHP Cody Poteet (#72) as their “27th Man.”
Who will replace Jon Berti?
Getting the call-up to the active roster is infielder Kevin Smith. He was on the fringe of the roster coming out of Spring Training but started the season in Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre.
In Spring Training, Smith had a .244/.326/.317 slash line in 46 plate appearances with one double, one triple, seven RBI and 13 strikeouts. At the Triple-A level this season, Berti has a .182/.282/.212 slash line.

Cody Poteet starting Game 2
The Yankees bumped fifth starter Luis Gil from his typical rotation spot and will start Poteet for Game 2 of the doubleheader. Despite his struggles in Spring Training, Poteet had a strong start in Triple-A to begin the season. He’s recorded 8.1 innings pitched and 12 strikeouts to go along with a 2.16 ERA and 0.60 WHIP.
