Erik ten Hag has ‘a lot of sympathy’ for Manchester United star Marcus Rashford this season, who has faced criticism for his poor performances.

This week saw Rashford hit out at the abuse he has suffered from United fans this term, insisting ‘enough is enough’ in a late-night post on social media.

The 26-year-old England international forward has registered just eight goals across 40 games in all competitions in what has been a dissapointing campaign.

It is a dramatic drop-off from the 2022-23 season in which Rashford conjured up 30 goals and was largely praised for his performances.

‘I’ve got a lot of sympathy for Rashy, of course,’ Ten Hag told a press conference on Friday ahead of United’s clash against Burnley at Old Trafford.

‘Last year, he had a brilliant season. I think the best season in his career, he scored 30 goals.

‘This season, he didn’t give the performances and people have been very critical. We have to back him.

‘Everyone should back him to get back to the levels of last year. I think he needs the support.

‘We all know what he’s capable of, we all have to support and push him. He can do better than this year. We saw last year when he was really brilliant.

‘I think the fans are behind us always. Wednesday [against Sheffield United] was louder than I have heard. Also away [they are] always supportive, backing the team and there is a very good connection between the team and the fans.’

Ten Hag has also provided an injury update on a number of stars including Mason Mount, Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez and Anthony Martial.

‘It’s the same squad [for the match against Burnley] but Mason Mount, he will return to the squad,’ the Dutchman added.

‘Next week, [Shaw, Martinez and Martial] have to make a step into team training and we think they can be available for the last weeks [of the season]. They are progressing well.’
