Erasmus breaks silence on Kolisi’s captaincy

Rassie Erasmus, the Springboks’ head coach, spoke to the media on Thursday in Potchefstroom after receiving his honorary doctorate from North-West University.

He addressed questions about Siya Kolisi’s future as the team’s captain. Erasmus explained that if Kolisi remains available for all training camps and receives support from his French club, Racing 92, a change in leadership may not be necessary.

Springboks: Upcoming Tests and Leadership Decisions

The Springboks will face Wales, Ireland, and Portugal in upcoming matches. The first game against Wales on 22 June falls outside the international window.

As a result, a separate captaincy decision will be made for that specific Test. Erasmus assured that the leadership role will be determined in due course, considering various factors and player availability.

Integrating Young Talent

Erasmus stressed the importance of bringing younger players into the Springboks’ squad. The Covid-19 pandemic impacted the team’s ability to introduce new talent in 2020.

However, Erasmus stated, “We definitely need to start throwing in younger players.” This highlights the necessity of renewal as the team enters the next World Cup cycle.

Erasmus: Confidence in Front Row Depth

Despite concerns about the potential absence of several front-row players for the Wales Test, Erasmus expressed confidence in the team’s depth. He mentioned that Sampie Swiegers of the Pumas was invited to the virtual alignment camp.

Additionally, with the possibility of the Bulls, Stormers, and Lions participating in the United Rugby Championship (PRC) play-offs, the Springboks may rely on players from the Sharks for the first Test.

Aiming for a World Cup Hat-Trick

Looking ahead to the 2027 World Cup, Erasmus stated that the Springboks will aim to secure a third consecutive title. However, he warned against underestimating the competition, especially with the recent appointments of top coaches in Australia and New Zealand.

Joe Schmidt has taken charge of the Wallabies, while Scott Robertson, known for his success with the Crusaders in Super Rugby, has replaced Ian Foster as the All Blacks’ head coach.

Safeguarding Match Strategies

Erasmus reassured fans that the team’s match plans were not compromised in the “Chasing the Sun 2” documentary. He emphasised that if any strategies were to be revealed, they would ensure to make necessary changes to maintain their competitive edge.

As the Springboks navigate leadership decisions, player development, and the pursuit of continued success, Rassie Erasmus’s insights shed light on the team’s approach and aspirations for the future.

The head coach’s comments demonstrate a balanced perspective, considering both the immediate challenges and the long-term goals of the team.
