Sussan Ley calls for Andrew Giles sacking over detainee debacle

Deputy Opposition Leader Sussan Ley has taken aim at Immigration Minister Andrews Giles, accusing the government of not acting fast enough to implement and then apply any re-detention orders.

In Senate estimates on Tuesday, it was revealed the Attorney-General’s office was briefed in June about potential problems in the ‘NZYQ’ case.

149 former immigration detainees were released last year after the High Court outlawed indefinite detention.

It’s been revealed that 24 of the freed detainees have reoffended since they were released into the community.

Ms Ley called for the Prime Minister to sack Mr Giles over the immigration detainee debacle.

“Where was the minister he was attending voice rallies … when is this minister going to go, when is Anthony Albanese going to sack him, clearly it needs to happen,” Ms Ley told Sky News Australia.

“If he doesn’t sack him then this is on the Prime Minister because it’s absolutely shameful that not one single preventive detention order was applied for.

“They have simply sat on their hands, and meanwhile community safety seems completely unimportant to them.”
