Royal Challengers Bengaluru seem to be in the midst of a nightmare season after conceding a record team total in their latest IPL 2024 contest. RCB played host to Sunrisers Hyderabad on Monday night at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium and crashed to their sixth defeat of the tournament.

On a flat Bengaluru pitch, SRH batters, led by Travis Head, racked up 287/3  in 20 overs – the highest ever team total in IPL history and the second-highest overall in all T20s. Not that RCB were too far behind as a blistering innings from Dinesh Karthik kept them in the contest before they finished at 262/7 with the visitors winning by 25 runs.

RCB continue to languish at the bottom of the 10-team competition and their chances of making it to the playoffs have taken a severe hit.

Irked by RCB’s latest performance, tennis legend Mahesh Bhupathi has appealed with the BCCI to enforce the sale of the franchise from the current owners as a measure to revive the team’s dwindling fortunes.

“For the sake of the Sport , the IPL, the fans and even the players I think BCCI needs to enforce the Sale of RCB to a New owner who will care to build a sports franchise the way most of the other teams have done so,” Bhupathi posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Despite boasting of superstars on their roster across every season of IPL, RCB have never been able to win the title. They have made it to the finals thrice though but finished runners-up on each occasion.

In IPL 2024, their toothless bowling attack has been facing the heat. For the SRH clash, RCB benched two of their key players Glenn Maxwell and Mohammed Siraj while Cameron Green missed his second game in a row.

However, their sorry run has continued.

RCB will have a break of five days to go back to the drawing board, reset their approach and relaunch their campaign.

“It’s important to go away and freshen your mind, it’s such a mental game. Sometimes you feel your mind is going to explode. When you get back to the contest you have to give full commitment,” RCB captain Faf du Plessis said at the post-match presentation on Monday.
