Jefferson County Precinct 1 Commissioner Vernon Pierce has died.
Pierce, who was first elected in 2020, was diagnosed with cancer in August 2023 and began aggressive treatment.
He and wife Sheree in November made a statement, at the time saying they were given “great news that the treatments have been successful in combating the cancer.” He was expected to continue undergoing treatment, but this time at a lower dose.
He didn’t publicly update constituents again until February, when he described himself as a “#survivor” at an American Cancer Society-affiliated Leadership Breakfast.
He reportedly died at 5 p.m., according to a statement on social media from Golden Triangle Republican Women President Elaine Henderson.
“He was one of our faithful supporters. Please keep Sheree and her family in your prayers,” she wrote.
Arrangements are pending, according to Sheree Pierce.
