Many Canadians probably remember the less than wintry conditions this year thanks to El Nino. But now some scientists say it may be over, with a cooler La Nina possibly on the horizon. So it’s like a teeter totter going up and down. So El Nino was going to end at some point in time. They usually last, you know, this one lasted like a typical time. El Nino is known for above average sea surface temperatures and that heat can release into the atmosphere, bringing more warmth to parts of Canada and the US. On Tuesday, Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology says it appears the weather event may have ended. However, even if it has atmospheric scientists Kent Moore cautions the dry conditions could linger, increasing the chances of more wildfires on Canada’s West Coast, According to more El Nino and the cooler La Nina’s impacts are more often felt in the winter, meaning this spring Canadians may see more local weather events like thunderstorms, though it is still difficult to forecast. I don’t think it will be anomalously different than usual just because again, it’s in this phase where what happens with El Nino or or lending doesn’t really have an impact. La Nina is likely to come into play this summer, which in turn could mean a more active hurricane season. The weaker wind shear during La Nina is unlikely to suppress hurricanes and combined with warmer Atlantic Ocean temperatures, there could be earlier and stronger storms. Environment Canada tells Global News while it does appear El Nino is on its way out, there may still be a leg before the full effects of its ending are felt. What is likely, however, is that should La Nina take effect, Canada will likely see a winter that is colder and wetter than the one we just left. Sean Prevel Global News.
