Sonowal unveils Rs 308 crore waterway projects in North East

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday launched projects worth Rs 308 crore for the development of waterways in the North East.

The projects aim to bolster trade and connectivity in the region.

Inaugurating various terminals across the region, including the Passenger-cum-Cargo Terminal at Bogibeel near Dibrugarh and the Inland Water Transport Terminal at Sonamura in Tripura, Sonowal emphasised their role in revitalising waterway transportation for both goods and passengers.

Additionally, upgraded terminals in Karimganj and Badarpur in Assam were also inaugurated, aiming to facilitate smoother trade activities.

Foundation stones were laid for essential infrastructures such as the Customs Immigration Office in Dhubri and the expansion of the Jogighopa Terminal.

Sonowal also announced the deployment of tourist jetties and Electric Hybrid Catamarans to enhance transportation and tourism along the Brahmaputra.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to waterway development, Sonowal said that the commencement of dredging operations by the Dredging Corporation of India in the North East region will further facilitate cargo movement and passenger transportation.

Sonowal emphasised the transformative potential of these projects, reflecting the government’s dedication to inclusive growth and the ‘Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas’ ideology.

The projects signify a substantial investment in the region’s waterways, with a focus on enhancing connectivity and trade.

Under initiatives like Sagarmala and Maritime India Vision, efforts are directed towards expanding port infrastructure and increasing the share of Inland Water Transport, aiming for comprehensive maritime sector growth and improved connectivity by 2030, Sonowal added.
