Un satélite que había sido lanzado al espacio en 1974 tuvo algunas fallas cuando se fue a desplegar, después de traspasar las fronteras de la Tierra. Por culpa de una maniobra desvió su trayectoria y se les perdió a los oficiales de la Fuerza Aérea de los Estados Unidos que lo habían lanzado. Reapareció brevemente a mediados de los años 90 y cuando querían establecer su órbita completa, para poder marcar su recorrido, se les volvió a escapar de sus rastros.

Hasta ahora, en pleno 2024, cuando tras los rastreos de algo llamado el 18° Escuadrón de Defensa Espacial, el satélite perdido apareció. De acuerdo con una reseña de Bio Bio, el satélite en cuestión se llama Infra-Red Calibration Balloon (S73-7).

Todavía no están seguros de que sea el aparato completo o uno de los fragmentos que se desplegaron cuando tuvo la falla, pero se aferran a este hallazgo, ya que forma parte de la basura espacial que no queremos tener en órbita.

El objetivo del S73-7 de la Fuerza Aérea norteamericana era que “debía servir como objetivo de calibración para varios otros equipos de detección remota electromagnética”, del entonces naciente programa espacial de los Estados Unidos. El sitio Space Sky Rocket lo describe como que era una esfera de calibración inflable de 66 cm de diámetro, lo que hace que encontrarlo sea bastante complicado.

Sin embargo, lo pudieron rastrear y ahora quieren saber en qué estado se encuentra y ver si lo pueden recuperar o definitivamente desechar para que no sea un estorbo para otros satélites.

“El problema es que posiblemente tenga una sección transversal de radar muy baja. Y tal vez lo que están rastreando es un dispensador o una pieza del globo que no se desplegó correctamente, por lo que no es metal y no se muestra bien en el radar”, dijo Jonathan McDowell, astrofísico del Centro Harvard-Smithsonian de Astrofísica.

El experto destaca la urgencia de conocer su trayectoria por lo antes comentado, es necesario saber dónde se encuentra cada objeto para evitar choques o impactos entre la abundante cantidad de satélites en la órbita de la Tierra. “Es básicamente como el control del tráfico aéreo. Todo esto está dando vueltas y si vas a intentar volar a través de eso, debes saber dónde están los peligros”, dijo McDowell.
