This is the dramatic moment an out-of-control London bus obliterated a family's parked Mercedes before smashing into their living room as they relaxed on the sofa.

Abdenour Aziez, his wife and two children ran for their lives as the 12-tonne double decker ploughed into their two-storey house when the driver tried to negotiate a tight bend in East Ham, London.

Hotel customer services manager Mr Aziez saw his beloved £15,000 Mercedes C class written off as it bore the brunt of the smash.

But he was forced to move his family into a hotel after experts warned the house was at risk of collapsing.

He said: 'We are just so lucky. We were in the front room, and we could have been killed.

'I dived into the sofa as I thought an earthquake was happening. I ran out to the garden and my wife ran upstairs. It was such a loud noise.'

The crash happened on Claughton Road, near West Ham's old Boleyn Ground, on Saturday evening.

The empty number five bus was negotiating a tight bend and heading for a stand when it careered into Mr Azeiz's front room.

The driver was freed by firefighters before police cordoned off the house.

'This is a terrible road for big buses', Mr Aziez added. 'It is only small and the space is very tight.

'Cars are parked on both sides of the street and buses have to work their way around a tight band outside my house.

'We would sometimes come out and watch the bus drivers trying to get the bus into the street around this bend, going backwards and forwards and then reversing.

'Sometimes cars would be reversing right into the main road, to let a bus pass.

'These buses have to be banned from this narrow road.

'We can't go into our own home. I don't want to be left homeless and nobody has told us anything since Saturday when it happened.'

His cousin Abdel Malik said: 'I am relieved they all safe. It could have been a lot worse as there were children playing on their bikes on the pavement right on this bend.

'The fact that Abdenour has a Mercedes which has a strong shell saved the house from a lot more damage.

'If it had been a smaller car or not one made of tough German steel, the bus would have come straight through it and into the house. But the Mercedes took a lot of the force of the crash.'

Another resident, student Riyad Khan, 18, said: 'The space on this road is too tight for two-way traffic and them big buses.

'I regularly see cars having to give each other way or backing up into the main road. It's so tight. This should be a one-way street with no buses. '

It also damaged a Toyota car parked on the adjacent drive.

The owner said: 'I am fed up with these buses using this narrow road. They need to be banned from here. '
