Turn grimy grout dazzling white with three household staples - no bleach or white vinegar

Say goodbye to grimy grout.

No matter how clean you keep your bathroom, there’s one part that never seems to sparkle the way it did when your bathroom was new – the grout between your tiles. Over time, grout can become discoloured and even mouldy thanks to the moisture generated when you have a shower or bath, and grout can even absorb some traces of shampoo and shower gel that are also a nightmare to remove.

If you need to clean your grout, your first port of call might be to use substances such as bleach or white vinegar, but both of these are corrosive and can damage your grout. Instead, one cleaning fan has suggested an easy hack using a mix of three fairly common items to get your grout back to its dazzling white shade.

A woman on TikTok named Jetara, who posts under the username @hireahomemaker, shared her “simple and effective” method to cleaning tile grout in no time – and all you need is washing up liquid, baking soda, and hydrogen peroxide.

In her video, Jetara sprinkled the baking soda onto her tiles alongside a squirt of dish soap and a splash of hydrogen peroxide. Then, she took a grout brush – which just looked like an old toothbrush – and scrubbed the ingredients into her grout. She then left the mixture to sit for 10 minutes before giving it a “good rinse off”, leaving nothing but bright white grout behind.

Washing up liquid and baking soda are items that most of us have in the house already, but you may need to get your hands on some hydrogen peroxide. Jetara, who is from Australia, explained she found hers in the first-aid section of Woolworths, so you may be able to find some in similar aisles in your local supermarket. You can also buy it online, with a 250ml bottle from Amazon priced at £4.93, and a 200ml bottle available from MyPharmacy for £3.49.

Although hydrogen peroxide is one of the most common bleaching agents, it is not the same thing as the product commonly referred to as bleach, which is made up of a compound called sodium hypochlorite and is diluted with water.

If you do need to pick up some washing up liquid, the cheapest place to buy it is Asda, where it will cost you 55p. Baking soda is the cheapest at Sainsbury’s for 59p. However, if you’re planning an Amazon order for hydrogen peroxide and want to get all your items together, you can pick up washing up liquid for around £3, and baking soda for just under £4.
