Hunt explains why Bafana ‘fail’ to get the best out of Percy Tau

SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt says Bafana Bafana need to get Percy Tau more involved in the game if they are to reach further in the African Cup of Nations.

The 29-year-old striker redeemed himself on Sunday by scoring a penalty against Namibia after missing one a game before.

Hunt has been critical of the way the team played against Mali last week and he told Peter du Toit on ThisisFootball Africa that Tau needed to get more involved.

Hunt says Tau should play a more central role for Bafana

“You look at the national team last night(last week Tuesday), you look at Percy Tau on the right side of midfield; honestly, Peter, he doesn’t know where he is. He’s playing on his own, he’s not playing within the team structure,” Hunt said.

“I mean he plays for Al Ahli there and they play a 4-3-3 system, and he plays on the right-hand side, so he doesn’t cut in or get close to the centre-backs”.

Hunt believes Bafana should put Tau upfront where he can run at defenders.

He also compared the striker’s play when he plays for club and country.

“No never, I’m not blaming the national team,” Hunt on Tau’s lack of involvement in Bafana games.

“I watched him when Al Ahli played Sundowns, he doesn’t touch the ball, he doesn’t get involved in the game, he just hangs on the wing there, comes inside, and cuts inside but he should be more effective. Play him as a nine, he’s more effective there because he’s not a wide player in a 4-4-2,” Hunt said on Tau.

Bafana plays Tunisia in their final group match on Wednesday.
