Hottest night in seven years for one unlucky state

hottest night in seven years for one unlucky state

National weather forecast for Saturday January 27

The sunshine state has been battling all extremes of weather for the last week, with last night breaking a seven-year record.

Brisbane had its warmest night since 2017 overnight Friday into Saturday, recording an overnight minimum of a sweltering 30.7 °C at St George Airport.

It was an annual record for the site, which is just one of a dozen regions in Queensland affected by heatwaves.

A severe heatwave warning is still in place for eastern Queensland, with high dew points and humid conditions exacerbating the unpleasant temperatures.

A severe heatwave warning remains in place for a dozen regions including: North Tropical Coast and Tablelands, Herbert and Lower Burdekin, Central Coast and Whitsundays, Capricornia, Central West, North West, Maranoa and Warrego, Darling Downs and Granite Belt, Wide Bay and Burnett and Southeast Coast Districts.

Meteorologists measure the moisture in the atmosphere by tracking the dew point – the temperature the air must cool to for condensation to occur.

The stifling conditions made it feel four to five degrees warmer than it really was.

The heatwave comes as the state once again switches into recovery mode after ex-tropical cyclone Kirrily took down power lines and uprooted trees in the state’s north-east.
