Descubren una erupción del Etna, en Sicilia, que quedó oculta por las nubes

Roma, 7 may (EFE).- Los expertos del Instituto Nacional de Geofísica y Vulcanología italiano (INGV) publicaron una investigación sobre la erupción ‘oculta’ del volcán Etna en Sicilia, sur de Italia, que pudo ser registrada por el sistema de seguimiento, pero que fue invisible para todos debido a las densas nubes.

El estudio publicado en la revista ‘Remote Sensing’ explica que la erupción volcánica se produjo durante una tormenta de nieve a finales de mayo de 2023, que generó un flujo piroclástico que paso desapercibido durante unos 10 días para todo el mundo, hasta que las condiciones climáticas mejoraron y los investigadores pudieron acceder a las zonas de la cumbre del volcán.

“Nuestro trabajo, además de describir científicamente el evento eruptivo que afectó al cráter sureste del Etna, quería llamar la atención sobre la importancia y eficacia de los sistemas de monitorización remota del INGV”, explica Emanuela De Beni, vulcanóloga del Observatorio del Etna del INGV y coautora del estudio.

De Beni explica que “de hecho, aunque el mal tiempo había oscurecido las cámaras de videovigilancia instaladas en el volcán, las demás estaciones de seguimiento vulcanológico funcionaron correctamente y las señales llegaron rápidamente a nuestra sala de operaciones en Catania, indicándonos que se estaba produciendo una erupción con una fuente de lava y emisión de dos flujos: uno hacia el Sur y otro hacia el Este”.

Una semana después de la erupción, investigadores del INGV se desplazaron a la zona de la cumbre para realizar sondeos con drones y proceder al mapeo y cuantificación de los productos erupcionados.

Todo esto ha permitido reconstruir la emisión de una columna de ceniza de entre 10 y 15 kilómetros de altura y por último, una fuente de lava.

El Etna, un volcán en continuo cambio, ha vuelto a dejar claro cómo puede generar diversos fenómenos vulcanológicos potencialmente peligrosos, que deben ser monitoreados constantemente, señalan los expertos.
