Edmonton Oilers forward Connor McDavid (97) carries the puck around Los Angeles Kings defenseman Mikey Anderson (44) during the first period in game one of the first round of the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Connor McDavid and Zach Hyman each had big nights in the Oilers’ 7-4 Game 1 win over the Kings on Monday.
After becoming one of only five players with 100 assists during the regular season in NHL history, McDavid — the consensus best player in the league — had five assists against the Kings in Game 1. He’s the first player with five assists in a playoff game since Geoff Courtnall of the St. Louis Blues in 1998.
Hyman, McDavid’s linemate, scored a career-high 54 goals during the regular season and had a hat trick and an assist on Monday.
This is the third consecutive season that the Oilers have faced the Kings in the first round of the playoffs. Edmonton won in seven games in 2022 and in six games last season.
Defenseman Evan Bouchard had four assists, and McDavid’s fellow superstars Leon Draisaitl and Adam Henrique had a goal and an assist each in Game 1.
It was the 50th career playoff game for both McDavid and Draisaitl. McDavid has 80 points and Draisaitl 79 in those contests. They are third and fourth, behind only Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux on that list.
Unfortunately, the pair doesn’t have a Stanley Cup to show for it. They’ll look to continue their quest on Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET for Game 2.
