The Labor party is split on the government’s new Migration Amendment Bill with members arguing the emergency legislation is “flawed” and in breach of the ALP National Platform.
Labor for Refugees NSW/ACT have raised serious human rights concerns about emergency legislation introduced last sitting week.
The Labor group called on the government to explain or provide a clear articulation about why the emergency legislation is necessary and also described it as law-making on the run.
“In the short time available we are not confident that we have found all the flaws in the Bill but we are aware of many,” the Labor for Refugees NSW/ACT letter read.
The letter went on to read, “we are concerned that in some respects the proposed legislation would appear to be in breach of the ALP National Platform”.
“If the Committee considers it must report by 7 May 2024, then we recommend that the report says that the Bill should by taken of the Senate’s Bills list until the Scrutiny Committee final report is available.”
