The commander of Operation Sovereign Borders has warned people smugglers could exploit Labor’s emergency migration laws to promote illegal sea passage.
Speaking to a Senate Committee, Commander Sonter said people smugglers monitor Australia’s domestic political environment to fuel lies they peddle to vulnerable people.

He worries blocking people from certain countries gives people smugglers the opportunity to market their services as the only way to reach Australia.
Labor’s migration bill was rejected in the Senate in March.
A Senate inquiry has been set up into the unprecedented migration powers included in the government’s bill.
