A Gears Of War collection is currently being ‘internally tested’ by developer The Coalition, according to an insider.

Five years after the last mainline instalment, it seems Microsoft could be planning to bring back Gears Of War in 2024, although only via a remaster compilation.

The series, originally created by Epic Games, started out in 2006 as one of the flagship titles for the Xbox 360. Its success, however, has dimmed somewhat with recent entries developed by The Coalition, who took the reins with 2016’s Gears Of War 4.

The Coalition’s last mainline entry was 2019’s Gears 5, with the franchise being kept alive since then with turn-based strategy spin-off Gears Tactics and a planned film adaptation at Netflix.

The latest rumour came during an episode of The Infinite Podcast, when Xbox podcast host Middle Aged Gamer Guy claimed a Gears of War collection is currently being ‘internally tested’ at The Coalition.

There’s no mention of what games would be included in the potential collection, or any release date. Rumours of a Gears of War collection, however, have floated around since 2022, so it’s always seemed a case of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’.

The source also claims The Coalition is simultaneously working on an all-new IP, which was previously said to have been cancelled last year by notable insider Jeff Grubb.

All the original games are already available to play through Xbox Game Pass and backwards compatibility but the implication has always been that this will be a Halo: The Master Chief style remaster compilation.

Microsoft is set to discuss its forthcoming slate at an Xbox Developer_Direct on Thursday, so given the timing of these new rumours it may well be that Gears Of War will make a surprise appearance there.
