Durban’s Old North Coast Road upgrade nears completion

durban’s old north coast road upgrade nears completion

The eThekwini Municipality provided an optimistic update on the ongoing upgrade of the Old North Coast Road in Durban North. The update emphasising significant progress and a projected completion date of September 2025.

This R181.9 million initiative, launched in May last year, aims to enhance local road networks and alleviate traffic congestion. This will benefit both residents and businesses in Ward 110 and surrounding areas.

The Old North Coast Road upgrade is progressing well

According to Project Engineer Sihle Myeza, despite encountering minor challenges, the project is advancing well.

“The project consists of constructing reinforced concrete retaining walls with parapets on the left-hand side and specialist lateral support retaining wall on the right-hand side. Other work includes bulk earthworks, stormwater, culverts, layer works, service relocations, kerbing, building sidewalks and median islands, subsoils, gabions, guardrails, asphalting and reinstatement,” stated Myeza.

Myeza added that, he oversees the monitoring and acceptance of the works, providing solutions to challenges that arise on site as well as scheduling site and technical meetings.

Challenges faced during the project

Myeza also highlighted challenges faced during the project, including unstable embankments that posed risks during construction. To address this issue, a geotechnical assessment was conducted. This led to the construction of specialist lateral support retaining walls to ensure stability and safety.

Additionally, other challenges faced are essential services such as water, electricity, and telecommunications being temporarily relocated for the retaining walls and earthworks to continue. These services will be permanently relocated.

Local residents and businesses will benefit in this upgrade

Local residents and businesses will benefit in this upgrade, recognising its potential to enhance connectivity and economic development in the area.

As construction progresses, stakeholders remain optimistic about the project’s long-term benefits. The upgraded Old North Coast Road will improve traffic flow and enhance safety. It will also promote economic growth in Durban North and surrounding regions.

The eThekwini Municipality reaffirms its commitment to delivering infrastructure projects that contribute to the city’s prosperity. Also the well-being of its residents.
