I’m Steve Kovac and this is your CNBC Tech check briefing. Tech 2 Interactive, the video game publisher behind games like Grand Theft Auto and NBA2K, is buying gaming studio Gearbox Entertainment. The company’s announced on Thursday. Take Two is paying $460 million for Gearbox, and then all stock deal. Gearbox is a studio that makes the popular shooting game called Borderlands, which is also the basis for an upcoming movie starring Cate Blanchett and Kevin Hart. This is Take Two’s biggest acquisition since it bought the mobile gaming company Zynga in 2022 for nearly $13 billion. Chinese electronics giant Xiaomi announced Thursday it will begin selling its first electric car, the SU-7, in April for over CN¥215,000, or a little more than 30 thousand U.S. dollars. The price undercuts Tesla’s Model 3 in China, which costs almost CN¥246,000, about $4000 US more than Xiaomi’s EV. It’s the latest Chinese company to enter the EV market and undercut Tesla on pricing, challenging Tesla’s once dominant market share. And finally, Amazon announced Wednesday it will invest another $2.75 billion in AI start up anthropic. Completing its previously announced investment total of $4 billion. It’s Amazon’s largest outside investment in the company’s three decade history, and Tropic makes a chat bot called Quad, which competes with products like Open A is ChatGPT. In fact, the latest version of cloud recently outperformed ChatGPT on chat bot Arena, which is a Crowdsource ranking of the most capable AI models. That’s all from CNBC headquarters.
