City young gun Galic chasing ALW double, Matildas dream

Daniela Galic is eyeing off higher honours after an impressive run with City.

Teen sensation Daniela Galic has big ambitions but is putting her lofty goals to the back of her mind as she chases more silverware with Melbourne City.

City have one foot in the A-League Women grand final after Galic, 17, scored the opening goal in last week’s 3-0 win over Newcastle in Maitland, the first leg of their semi-final.

Attacking midfielder Galic will again be crucial in Sunday’s reverse fixture at AAMI Park, where City want to finish the job.

“Obviously every game you want to score but in a final it means that little bit extra more,” Galic told AAP.

“I’m just trying to help the team make it to the final.

“It’s helpful when you’ve got a 3-0 lead. But we know what the Jets are capable of.

“We’re obviously happy with the previous result from Sunday but we’ve still got another 90 (minutes) to go to make the final.”

Galic and 15-year-old sensation Shelby McMahon have both been crucial in City’s late run to snatch the premiers plate, along with scoring against the Jets.

The teenager has relished playing under coach Dario Vidosic, a former Socceroos playmaker, who has helped Galic develop her spatial awareness and positioning while backing her to express herself on the ball.

“Dario has trust in us young players, which has shown,” she said.

“Shelby’s come on and scored two games in a row now in big games and myself as well.

“Dario having belief and starting me, that helps a lot – you know that your coach is confident and believes in you.”

Galic, 17, appears a Matilda-in-waiting and recently joined the senior team as a train-on player ahead of their Olympic qualifiers.

“It was very good and eye-opening for me – just to see the level I want to be at,” she said.

“Coming back home now, I’m doing everything I can to go to another camp, and then hopefully be at that level as well one day.

“They just do everything at such a high speed and at good quality and that’s definitely something I need to improve on to get to the next level.”

The impressive playmaker, who moved from Sydney to Melbourne to progress her career and lives with teammate Caitlin Karic and her family, has high ambitions for her club career.

“The end goal is definitely to play overseas but obviously don’t want to rush into it,” she said.

“Just need to make sure I’m making the right decisions.

“Obviously, I want to be ready, physically and technically, before I do make that decision.”

Besides, Galic has unfinished business to think about first.

“It was great to win the premiership,” she said.

“But we all have a bigger goal and that’s to go for the double.”
