Greens Treasury Spokesperson Nick McKim has blasted Treasurer Jim Chalmers for his “great big fat lie” that he can’t do anything about interest rates and has accused him of “trying to change the law to turn his lie into reality”.
Jim Chalmers ‘trying to change the law to turn his lie into reality’: Greens Senator
Last year, Dr Chalmers announced he would abolish a power under the Reserve Bank’s governing legislation that provides a treasurer with the ability to override an RBA decision.
“We know why Dr Chalmers is doing this: because he wants to keep wringing his hands and pretend there’s nothing he can do about interest rate rises,” Mr McKim said at a press conference on Thursday.
“That is a great big fat lie.
“There’s plenty he can do about interest rate rises; he’s trying to change the law to turn his lie into reality.”
