China lifts tariffs on Australian wines

China has confirmed it’s lifting tariffs of up to 200% that were imposed on our top drops four years ago. This will take effect from tomorrow. The crippling tariffs were a consequence of a souring relationship back in 2020. In recent times tires have stabilised. Now we’ve seen this matter resolved, we’ll be working with the industry to ensure that we get our product back onto Chinese supermarket shelves as quickly as possible. We can’t afford to take the foot off the accelerator though when it comes to market diversification as well, we have to keep balancing our exports. Keep looking for opportunities internationally and here at home as well. But for right now, let’s celebrate what we’ve just achieved with China. It’s a terrific announcement. China only had until Sunday, though, to make this call, otherwise Australia would have resumed legal action with the World Trade Organization. Some wine makers say they’ll approach business with Beijing with a note of caution in future, but ultimately, resuming trade will mean big windfalls for Aussie producers.
