Cape Town: 8-hour water disruption set for Monday in certain areas

Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Directorate has announced upcoming maintenance work in certain areas, leading to temporary water supply disruptions.

Scheduled maintenance activities, including pipe and valve installations, repairs, and replacements, will affect water supply in Witsands, Saxonworld, Three Fountains, and Farm Areas (Atlantis).

Water disruption due to pipeline repairs

The main water supply pipeline to these areas will undergo repairs from 8:00 to 16:00 on Monday, 29 April, resulting in water supply disruptions during this period.

Residents are advised to prepare accordingly, with water tankers available for domestic use in affected areas.

“The City sincerely regrets any inconvenience caused. This critical maintenance work is done on our water supply infrastructure to benefit customers,” said City of Cape Town.

Blackheath Water Treatment Plant temporarily shut down

In addition, the Blackheath Water Treatment Plant will be temporarily shut down from 6:00 on Thursday, 2 May, until 20:00 on Friday, 3 May, for the installation of penstocks. This shutdown will impact water supply to the Glen Garry and Newlands reservoirs. Residents citywide are urged to reduce water consumption during this period.

Stellenbosch Municipality has been informed to make alternate arrangements during the maintenance period.

The city assures residents that these disruptions are part of a proactive infrastructure maintenance and upgrade programme. The programme aims to ensure the future continuity of water supply by addressing issues such as unaccounted-for water.

Key points regarding larger-scale planned water supply disruptions

Residents are reminded of some key points regarding larger-scale planned water supply disruptions:

  • The timing of maintenance work is carefully chosen to minimise disruption.
  • Construction sites where repairs are carried out are off-limits to the public.
  • Maintenance may sometimes take longer than anticipated due to complexity.
  • After water supply restoration, there may be temporary discolouration or cloudiness due to trapped air in pipes, which is normal and will settle over time.

Cape Town appreciates residents’ understanding and cooperation during these necessary maintenance activities, which ultimately aim to improve water supply reliability for all.
