Call center versus universidades

Las empresas de apoyo, soporte, ventas y cobros por teléfono, que prestan sus servicios a varios sectores, han tenido un crecimiento notable en los últimos años en Colombia. Según El Nuevo Siglo, en noviembre de 2023 había 1.500 empresas de este tipo registradas y su proyección de crecimiento para este año era del 15 %. Estas empresas les dan empleo a gran cantidad de jóvenes; de hecho, el mismo medio informaba que el 41 % de los trabajadores eran menores de 29 años. Es innegable su aporte social y económico al país.

Pero el clima laboral en muchos call centers es deficiente. Se sabe que el trato es injusto y grosero, y hay situaciones de abuso de los jefes. No hay cifras exactas por el temor de muchos de estos jóvenes de perder el empleo, ya que consideran esta salida como su única oportunidad. Y en general, así es. No tienen resultados académicos suficientes en su bachillerato para pensar siquiera en una universidad pública ni recursos económicos para pagar una matrícula en cualquier universidad privada. Si trabajan, no les queda tiempo para estudiar. Y varios ya tienen familia propia por la cual responden.

Por otra parte, las universidades, en especial las privadas, están sufriendo por falta de estudiantes. No es suficiente la flexibilidad y adaptabilidad de los programas académicos a las necesidades de horarios de los estudiantes potenciales, o las facilidades de pago, tampoco las opciones de internacionalización, investigación o prácticas laborales en excelentes empresas.

Los jóvenes claman por la falta de oportunidades y es innegable que esto es responsabilidad del Estado, no de las universidades.

Ante este panorama, los jóvenes no continúan sus estudios. Ingresan a trabajar a lo que se les acomode más, en este caso, los call centers. Y así, estas empresas tienen una fila larga de interesados en trabajar allí, mientras algunas universidades están cerrando y otras están a punto de hacerlo.

La propuesta incluye: control de condiciones laborales a estas empresas; beneficios para las empresas que promuevan el desarrollo profesional de sus empleados, brindándoles tiempo para realizar sus estudios superiores, y que las universidades establezcan líneas de crédito y horarios especiales para estudiantes provenientes de los call centers.

Solo así mejorarían las condiciones de quienes trabajan allí y la situación de muchas instituciones de educación superior en Colombia.
