The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has warned against the flying of kites near the airport in Virac, Catanduanes after the nylon string of a kite got entangled in the wings of an airplane.

Fortunately, the string did not get into the propeller and cause an accident but the plane was forced to return to the airport and make an emergency landing.

The public is reminded that under the town ordinance, such incidents carry a penalty of P2,500.

The ordinance covers 43 barangays within a five-kilometer radius of the Virac Airport.

In recent months, CAAP personnel have confiscated several kites in the vicinity of the airport.

“Ang malalaking saranggola na pinalilipad dito, ‘pag ito kinain o na-ingest ng engine lalo na nitong ating commercial flight, delikadong mag-cause ito ng pagkasira o magkaroon ng emergency,” Primo Eleda, Airport Manager of Virac Airport – CAAP, said.

Hot air balloons, aerial drones, or any flying contraptions that could pose a risk to aircraft operations, are also not advised to be flown near the airport. — GMA Regional TV
