Bruno Fernandes raises possibility of leaving Manchester United

Bruno Fernandes says he will consider his future this summer and that staying at Manchester United will be down to his club wanting him.

As revealed this week, United will consider offers for almost all of their squad this summer apart from a clutch of rising stars, and Fernandes has left the door open to a move.

“Obviously, it doesn’t just depend on me, does it?” he said. “A player always has to want to be here, but at the same time, you have to want him to stay. At the moment, I feel there’s that on both sides.

“I’m not thinking too much about the future, not least because, obviously, this season hasn’t been at the level I’d hoped for, either individually or collectively, so far.

“So, if you want me to be very honest, if I have to think about not continuing in the Premier League, it won’t be until after the Euros because nothing will be able to take my focus away from the FA Cup final and the Euros, as there’s nothing more important than that at the moment.”

The Portugal midfielder, 29, has two full seasons left on his contract at Old Trafford, although the club have a one-year extension option on the terms. He is in his fourth season at United after arriving from Sporting Lisbon in a deal starting at £47 million rising to £68 million depending on performance-related targets.

He would still command a healthy fee if sold, given his contract and standing at United since his arrival. Erik ten Hag recently praised him after turning around the clash against Sheffield United.

“He shows his leadership,” said Ten Hag. “But also with his energy, in his transition both ways, it is very important. He tries to encourage the team. He is doing very well and we are very pleased with his performance and with his attitude.

“I think we put him in the right position, he finds the right spots. When he is in that position, he makes the right decisions. He can create a lot, score a goal, assist, have key actions. So we are very happy with his performances.”
