Bushfire destroys homes in Victoria’s south-west
The official count of properties destroyed by Victoria’s bushfires has risen to 44, the state’s premier says.
Premier Jacinta Allan told ABC Melbourne Radio the revised count of lost homes in the Grampians area after two major bushfires wreaked havoc in the region.
“People who know that beautiful part of the Grampians know that Pomonal is a little community so that is a significant proportion – perhaps as much as half of the town has experienced loss,” Allan told ABC Radio Melbourne.
Allan could not provide a breakdown of the types of homes and properties that been destroyed as part of the new figures.
Yesterday it was confirmed 24 homes, a business and a primary school were destroyed in Pomonal, which was estimated to be 40 per cent of the town.
The blazes have been controlled by emergency services after they began at the start of the week.
At least five firefighters were left with burns after their truck was overwhelmed in an unexpected burn-over while fighting the fires in the Grampians National Park on Tuesday.
All five were assessed by paramedics and suffered minor burns, the CFA said.
At 8pm last night, 44,000 were still without power after ferocious storms caused major electrical transmission lines and power generators to fail.
