Bronte Campbell suffers setback before Olympic trials

Three-time Olympian Bronte Campbell has been forced to pull out of the Australian Open Championships on the Gold Coast due to a calf injury.

The 29-year-old, who took a break from swimming after the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, raced in the heats of the 100m freestyle on Wednesday morning.

Campbell clocked 54.13 seconds and qualified eighth fastest for Wednesday evening’s final, which features her sister Cate Campbell, Mollie O’Callaghan, Emma McKeon and Shayna Jack.

However, Bronte Campbell’s name did not appear on the finals sheet.

Swimming Australia said she picked up a minor calf injury during training before this week’s meeting.

Campbell’s reaction time of 0.87 seconds suggests she had trouble pushing off the blocks in her heat swim.

According to Swimming Australia, the injury is minor but Campbell won’t compete for the rest of the week. She is expected to be fit for Australia’s Olympic trials from June 10-15 in Brisbane.

Campbell, who won gold medals in the 4x100m freestyle relays in Rio and Tokyo, is targeting the 50m and 100m freestyle events in her comeback.

The women’s 100m freestyle final takes place at 7.17pm (AEST).
