Former Brisbane mayor Graham Quirk says the 2032 Olympic Games are a “once-in-a-century opportunity” and believes a new stadium would have a “long-lasting legacy” for Queenslanders.
A federal inquiry has found the Queensland government is yet to begin tangible preparations for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games.
It heard the Miles government had begun a ‘shadow review’ before former lord mayor Graham Quirk had finalised a 60-day venue review the premier asked him to lead.
Mr Quirk told the hearing he had been ‘blindsided’ by the move.
“This is a once-in-a-century opportunity that we have,” Mr Quirk told Sky News Australia.
“Lots of time people look at the costs – can I just say every recommendation that we made as a panel will have a long-lasting legacy for Queenslanders.
“There will be a use of those facilities for two weeks – for the Olympic and Paralympic Games – but every one of the facilities we’ve recommended are about legacy and are about benefit to Queenslanders.
“A government of some sort is going to have to build a new stadium over the next decade or so, and so that’s why we’ve recommended let’s do it in time for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.”
