A 10-year-old Indigenous boy has taken in his own life while in state care.

The boy, who had been living with relatives approved by the state authorities in the north of Perth, died on Friday night, The West Australian reported.

The child and his parents cannot be named for legal reasons.

The boy was among four children who were removed from the parents three years ago.

They had not seen the youngster in eight months and they said that his Christmas presents were still wrapped up for him to open.

The boy’s father told the newspaper said he ‘dropped to the ground’ when he was told the awful news over the phone.

‘I just screamed, hung the phone up, and dropped to the ground,’ he said.

‘Then I got a phone call back again saying that he was gone.’

The child’s mother said: ‘We can never have our little boy back.’

She remembered him as a ‘handsome young man’ who loved soccer.

They were allowed to see his body on Tuesday and are now organising his funeral.

A Department of Communities spokesperson said it could not comment on individual cases.

‘The death of any child or young person is a tragedy, which has a devastating impact on the families, friends and communities involved,’ they said.

‘The safety and wellbeing of children is always the Department of Communities’ highest priority.’
