Three boots stores are closing this week

Boots is shutting the doors on more pharmacies this week as the retailer pushes ahead with its closure plan.

The high street health and beauty chain announced last year that it would be reducing the number of its pharmacy stores from 2,200 to 1,900. Boots said it would be only closing sites that had another situated less than three miles away and that the move would help “consolidate the business”.

Since the announcement in June, a raft of Boots stores have disappeared from the high street – with more set to go this week. Boots in Castlecroft in Wolverhampton will shut on March 21, with another branch in Rhos-on-Sea, Wales, shutting for good a few days after on March 23. Boots in Rainham, Kent, is then set to close on March 30, with the branch reportedly switching hands to the independent community pharmacy Jhoots, according to KentOnline.

Customers have been told to speak to the pharmacy team if they are worried about their prescriptions. Just last week, the retailer closed two branches in Teeside and in Sprowston, Norwich. Alongside this high streets in North Kenton, Newcastle, Welwyn Garden City and York have all lost a Boots pharmacy branch in the last few weeks. The closures are set to continue with the Boots branch in Colwyn Bay, North Wales set to go on April 6.

Brits have not been happy with the closures with many groups across the country launching petitions to keep their local branch open. The village of Farncombe managed to completely save their branch from being shuttered after locals, councillors and MPs got involved – including the country’s Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt.

Conservative MP for Clwyd West David Jones said he was dismayed at the news of the closure in Rhos and Colwyn Bay. He tolkd NorthWalesLive: “This is hugely bad news for the local community. This is not a case of simple shop closures. Pharmacies play an important role in the delivery of health care, and many people will be extremely worried as to how they will be able to obtain essential medicines.

“More broadly, it is another body blow for the local retail economy. The Colwyn Bay store is an important element of the once-vibrant Station Road shopping centre, which has already seen the closure of several other prominent stores, including WH Smith.”
