Blast averted in Maharashtra as police seize explosives dumped by Naxalites
The police averted a major IED attack by the Naxalites in Maharashtra and seized at least six pressure cookers filled with explosives, detonators and three claymore pipes filled with explosives and shrapnel, officials said.
Acting on intelligence input, two teams of Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS), one unit of C-60 commando team and a Quick Action Team (QAT) of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were dispatched to Gadchiroli’s Tipagad area on Sunday, from where the recoveries were made.
“When the teams reached the spot, they found 06 pressure cookers filled with explosives and detonators and 3 claymore pipes filled with explosives and shrapnels were also found. The remaining 3 claymore pipes were without any explosives,” Gadchiroli SP Neelotpal said.
The explosives were recovered by the police.
The teams also sized gunpowder, which was filled in a plastic bag, medicines and blankets at the same spot, he added.
In the operation, as many as nine IEDs and three claymore pipes were also destroyed on the spot by the BDDS team, the SP said.
There was credible intel that Maoists planned to carry out IED blasts during the Lok Sabha elections in the state. However, since the intel did not specify the location, area domination exercises were carried out, and there was heavy deployment of security forces to avert attacks, he added.Â
Gadchiroli-Chimur Lok Sabha constituency went to polls on April 19 and the results will be declared on June 4.
