Blake Griffin calls time on his career, retires a Celtic

Blake Griffin has officially announced his retirement from the NBA. The former high flyer was a free agent throughout the 2023-24 season, despite rumored overtures from the Boston Celtics about a potential return for the current season. As Boston was the last team Griffin represented, he is technically retiring as a Celtic.

The veteran big man announced his decision via his social media pages. He also provided a statement in which he noted his gratitude for his time in the league and thanked his family and support system for their guidance throughout his tenure.

“As I reflected on my career, the one feeling I kept coming back to and the one thing I wanted to express was thankfulness,” Griffin wrote. “I’m thankful for every single moment-not just the good ones: the wins, the awards, the dunks, and the memorable times spent with family, friends, fans, teammates, and coaches… I have to acknowledge my parents, Tommy and Gail, and my brother, Taylor, for their unconditional support and guidance.”

Griffin, 35, played in 765 regular-season NBA games during his career. He averaged 19 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists while shooting 49.3% from the field and 32.8% from 3-point range. He also participated in 68 playoff games but was unable to experience the joy of winning a championship.

Griffin played in 41 games for the Celtics last season. He quickly became a fan favorite and was part of the “Bus One Boys” that became prominent in the fan base. The former six-time All-Star will be missed by NBA fans, but after a 13-year career, it’s clear Griffin believes now is the right time to bow out.
