Texans to meet with 2024 draft QB prospect

The Texans are doing their homework on the 2024 NFL draft quarterback prospects.

No, this doesn’t mean C.J. Stroud’s future is in doubt or that Houston wants to add competition to the room. However, the Texans are hosting South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler for a Top-30 pre-draft visit, according to Redzone Insiders’ James Layton.

Rattler figures to be the sixth quarterback taken in the draft after Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, JJ McCarthy, Michael Penix Jr. and Bo Nix. He finished with consecutive 3,000-yard passing seasons for South Carolina and did so during his first year as Oklahoma’s full-time starter in 2020 before he was replaced by Williams in 2021. Rattler finished his college career with a 68.5 completion percentage for 10,807 yards, 77 touchdowns and 32 interceptions.

He’s an intriguing prospect because of his pre-college hype and his pro-ready skills. The issues with Rattler are his size at 6-foot, 200 pounds, his below-average arm strength and reports of his attitude bellowing his Oklahoma benching. Rattler is much more of a developmental prospect than a potential Year 1 starter, meaning he’d be best suited to sit on the bench and learn behind other quarterbacks.

Where does that fit in Houston? That’s unclear. Stroud is the unquestioned face of the future, while the team’s other quarterbacks are Case Keenum and Davis Mills. One of those is likely the odd man out — especially if the Texans add a quarterback in the draft.
