Liberal MP Zoe McKenzie says the Coalition wants to make sure the Albanese government’s detainee bill is “fit for purpose” and says it is “better to get it right the first time”.
Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil has accused the Opposition of playing politics after the Albanese government failed to secure emergency removal powers for non-citizens.
The Opposition and Greens in the Senate rejected the government’s urgency with the bill and referred the laws to a parliamentary inquiry for scrutiny.
“We need to make sure it’s fit for purpose,” Ms McKenzie told Sky News Australia.
“Sometimes what you have to do is go back and amend these laws; it’s better to get it right the first time if you can, and so that is precisely the process that the Coalition has put in train under Senator Paterson’s leadership.”
