Bersatu's candidate nomination decision crucial in KKB polls - Analyst

SHAH ALAM – Bersatu faces the imperative of nominating a candidate for the upcoming Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election if they wish to compete with DAP’s Malay candidates, argues political analyst Mujibu Abd Muis.

Mujibu stressed that if Perikatan Nasional (PN) opts for a non-Malay candidate, the advantage will inevitably go to the Malay candidate.

“I believe Bersatu must nominate a candidate in Kuala Kubu Baharu for this by-election.

“If not a Malay candidate, the party might struggle to compete, especially considering the 2023 state election, which demonstrated DAP’s enduring support among non-Malay voters.

“Therefore, their support base is unlikely to shift.

“This strategic move presents a new dynamic for DAP with a changed landscape, but the Malay and non-Malay voters’ acceptance of a Malay candidate remains uncertain.

“Initially, we assumed non-Malay Pakatan Harapan (PH) supporters wouldn’t hesitate to vote for a Malay candidate,” Mujibu said.

Recent media reports suggested that DAP is leaning towards fielding a Malay candidate for the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election.

Sources indicated that Hulu Selangor Municipal Council Member Saripah Bakar is currently a frontrunner to represent PH on May 11.

Meanwhile, political analyst Professor Dr Ahmad Marthada Mohamed from Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) viewed DAP’s decision to nominate a Malay candidate as a strategic move to secure votes from that demographic.

“While there may be a slight increase in voter support in the area, it may not significantly impact PH’s longstanding support base, as demonstrated in several past elections.

“With Barisan Nasional (BN) now part of PH, votes could increase.

“Previously, support from both parties may have been divided,” Marthada said.

In a related matter, Bersatu Information Chief Datuk Razali Idris emphasised that candidate selection is contingent upon the PN Supreme Council’s decision.

“I cannot provide certainty as it hinges on PN’s decision.

“While everyone can express their intentions, we cannot preempt the outcome.

“Ultimately, the PN Supreme Council’s decision is conclusive,” Razali said.
