Bernardo Silva reacts to Arsenal and Liverpool stumbling in Premier League title race

Bernardo Silva insists Manchester City retaining the Premier League title is anything but a forgone conclusion, despite Liverpool and Arsenal handing the initiative to the reigning champions following shock defeats last weekend.

Pep Guardiola’s relentless winning machine moved ominously to the summit following a crushing 5-1 win over Luton, and watched on with delight as their closest rivals were beaten by Crystal Palace and Aston Villa just 24 hours later.

With just six games remaining and a two point advantage, few would back against City claiming what would be an unprecedented fourth league title in succession.

A back-to-back treble remains on the cards too, but speaking ahead of tomorrow night’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against Real Madrid, Silva warned the picture can change dramatically again in the space of a few days.

‘It was obviously a very good weekend for us, I’m not going to deny that because personally I wasn’t expecting both teams to drop points,’ said Silva.

‘Before we didn’t depend only on ourselves so we had to do our job and wait for them to drop points.

‘Now the situation has changed a bit because we just depend on ourselves because if we do our job properly we win the Premier League so happy with the results and not going to deny that.

‘But there is a long way to go. Two weeks ago when we played Arsenal everything looked like it was gone and now it looks like Man City is going to win the Premier League.

‘In two weeks maybe it will change again. That’s why football is beautiful becuase things changes so quick and you need to be really focused game by game. It’s not right to start thinking about trebles because it’s not realistic.

‘We have to be game by game, Madrid tomorrow then on the weekend we have another tough game against Chelsea in the FA Cup then we have Premier League.

‘In one week we could lose all three competitions. We have to be focused game by game do our job well and to extend this hope for one more week and eventually hopefully we will do it again.’

Despite injuries to key defensive personnel, City emerged from the Bernabeu a week ago with a creditable 3-3 draw that put them in a strong position to reach the last four.

Kyle Walker could be back to play a role in containing the threat of Vinicius Junior tomorrow night and Silva is relishing the potential return of his captain.

‘Kyle Walker is a player that has controlled some of the best wide players in the world,’ he said.

‘He always does phenomenally well, he’s an important player for us… Now we do have him… But if he doesn’t play, we have other solutions, other options.’
