The 2024 Masters tournament marks the seventh appearance in Jon Rahm’s career. However, this year’s prestigious major is going to be a bit different for the Spanish golfer.

The obvious fact to point out is that Rahm enters the 88th edition of the Masters Tournament as the defending champion at Augusta National. The 29-year-old earned his second PGA major win last April when he bested the rest of the field in dominant fashion, winning by four strokes.

However, this weekend marks the first time that Rahm is playing in a PGA Tour event this golf season. The Spaniard was the most recent golfer to make the move from the PGA Tour to LIV Golf, signing a monstrous deal with the Saudi Arabians to join their pro golf organization.

The tension between the LIV golfers and those on the PGA won’t be as prevalent this time around as it was last year when the news was still fresh, but Rahm, already with a target on his back as the last bearer of the green jacket, may have added more motivation to his peers who are hoping to knock off the Masters champion.

The exact details of Rahm’s contract with LIV have not been revealed. However, it has been reported that it’s a multi-year contract worth more than $300 million, according to ESPN.

Initially, Rahm’s deal was reported to be worth more than $500 million to sign with the Saudi-backed golf league. That reported number has since been reduced; however, it still marks one of the biggest contracts that LIV Golf has handed out since its inception.

“I’m not allowed to speak on that right now,” Rahm said at the time of the agreement. “There are certain things that are not gonna be public. This decision was for many reasons, what I thought was best for me. Don’t get me wrong — it’s a great deal. I had a really great offer in front of me and that’s why I took it. They put me in a position where I had to think about it and I did.”

Since Rahm only recently joined LIV Golf, he has only played in a handful of the organization’s events. With that said, he has wasted no time finding himself near the top of the leaderboards.

In his five showings on the tour so far, the Spaniard has three top-5 finishes, including a third-place finish at the event in Mayakoba, Mexico in February, his first LIV event. He finished fifth at the Jeddah event in Saudi Arabia and fifth at the most recent tournament in Miami.

According to Spotrac, Rahm’s estimated career earnings is about $77.2 million. That consists of $51.5 million made at official tournaments, $1.62 million at unofficial tournaments, and $9 million from the player index program.

In 2023 alone, it’s estimated that Rahm earned roughly $21.3 million. He earned $3.24 million for winning the 2023 Masters.
