FA Cup quarter-final details for Leicester City as huge Championship game moved

Leicester City are one win away from another trip to Wembley Stadium in the FA Cup as they booked their place in the quarter-final of the competition.

Enzo Maresca’s men were looking to bounce back from two defeats in a row in the Championship when they travelled down to the Vitality Stadium to take on Premier League side Bournemouth. As promised, the Italian made a lot of changes to his team with concentration on league matters.

But that didn’t have too much of an impact on the performance as City more than held their own against a Premier League outfit who made fewer changes to their team. City had chances to win the game in normal time through Yunus Akgun and Ricardo Pereira, but the match went to extra time with a winner having to be decided on the night.

It was towards the end of the first period of the added 30 minutes when City scored what turned out to be the decisive goal. Abdul Fatawu cut inside and curled a brilliant shot past Mark Travers in the 105th minute – it was an effort he has tried a few times this season, but it paid off this time.

City then had 15 minutes to hold on and book their place in the final eight. They were never really troubled as the second half of extra time ticked away and the full-time whistle was greeted with celebrations from the away end.

The progression now means that a potentially big Championship game will now be moved to make way for the quarter-final. Leicester were due to host Southampton on Friday, 15 March, but that weekend is when the quarter-finals of the FA Cup will take place, meaning that the Southampton game will be moved to a free midweek later in the season.

City will find out who they play in the final eight when the draw takes place on Wednesday at 7pm and will be shown live on ITV4. Coventry City, Manchester City, Newcastle United or Newcastle, Chelsea or Leeds, Nottingham Forest or Manchester United, Wolves or Brighton and Liverpool or Southampton are the other teams who will be included in the draw.
