NOW you can contact the President with a SASSA complaint

We have no doubt most of the 150 000 grant recipients with newly suspended accounts will want to contact the President with a SASSA complaint. And that’s entirely fair after the South African Social Security Agency suspended SASSA profiles for potentially fraudulent activity at the start of 2024.

The mass suspension of SASSA accounts, mostly related to Children’s Grants. But it got us thinking about the best way to lodge a complaint that actually gets heard. So, if the agency itself seems unable or unwilling to field complaints, who can you escalate matters to?

We were intrigued to see you can in fact contact the President with a SASSA complaint. It’s known as the President’s hotline. Simply dial 17737. The Gov.za website says members of the public can use the toll-free hotline to lodge queries or complaints relating to any government services. There you go, SASSA is government aid.

If the agency is unhelpful or unresponsive, you can also contact the President with a SASSA complaint by emailing [email protected]. The idea behind this is to create an interactive, accessible and responsive government, says the Office of the Presidency. Its office is supported by a network of public liaison officers in national departments, provinces and municipalities. Theoretically, this means it should be able to get a lot more done than overworked SASSA officials.

However, parties like the EFF and DA responded by saying they would up social grants and ‘do them properly.’
