Katherine Bennell-Pegg is hoping her success in becoming an astronaut will encourage a generation of Australian space explorers.
The mother of two has become the first certified astronaut to graduate under the Australian flag.
Ms Bennell-Pegg spoke with Sky News Science and Tech Correspondent Brent O’Halloran soon after stepping off the graduation stage at the European Space Agency facility in Germany.
“I look forward to opening more doors for more Australians to be involved in women’s spaceflight in the future,” she told Sky News Australia.
“What I really hope for is that I can help lift the level of aspiration amongst young people in Australia to dream big for themselves for their communities, their families, their country and their world,” she said.
